While in Georgia he cultivated an avid interest in advanced small animal surgery techniques including orthopedics, reconstructive soft tissue surgery, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He then spent a year working on a research project at the University of Georgia investigating experimental gene therapy techniques for treating bronchioalveolar carcinoma.
